Old Town and Everything After

Helena has two landscaping personalities. Around Old Town and the Buck Creek corridor, properties are older, closer together, and shaped by their proximity to the water — established trees, mature beds, and drainage that has to be respected rather than fought. Outward from there, Helena has grown quickly, and much of the housing stock is recent enough that the yards are still essentially unfinished: builder-grade sod, a few foundation shrubs, and little else.

Those two situations call for opposite approaches. Older properties usually need renovation and editing — taking out what has outgrown its spot and restoring what is worth keeping. Newer properties need structure built from scratch. We have worked in both for over two decades across Helena and the greater Shelby County area.

Common Questions from Helena Homeowners

Why does my new lawn look worse than the builder’s sod did?

Because the sod was laid on compacted subsoil. On new construction, heavy equipment presses the red clay into something close to pavement, then a thin layer of topsoil goes over the top. Roots cannot get through it. Aeration and soil amendment fix the cause; more fertilizer does not.

What grass should I have?

Central Alabama falls in USDA zones 7b to 8a. Bermuda and zoysia handle our summers and go dormant and brown in winter. Fescue holds color through the cool months but suffers badly in July and August, especially in full sun. Which one is right depends mostly on how much direct sun your yard actually gets.

When is the best time to plant?

Fall, for trees and shrubs. Planting in October or November lets roots establish through the mild winter before the first hot, dry stretch arrives. Spring planting works but demands far more watering to survive the first summer.

Can you fix a yard that stays wet?

Usually. Grading, French drains, downspout routing, and dry creek beds solve most of it. If the volume of water is genuinely beyond what a landscape solution can handle, we will tell you that up front rather than sell you something that will fail.
